Video Loop (DV): single channel, color, sound, 2:40 min, 2006/07
In a fixed camera position, the video shows a small section of the boardwalk in Venice Beach, California. While in the foreground cyclists and joggers cross the image in very regular succession, two policemen appear in the background, strolling along the hilly lawn and stopping briefly in order to inspect the traffic on the Front Walk. Besides, about midway through the video, police car sirens emerge in the off, referring to conflicts beyond the homogeneous, idyllic space in front of the camera. An additional sound that seems to come from the area behind the camera can be made out as the shaking of spray cans, making a connection to the graffiti on the trunks of the palm trees. The different elements of the video make up an only minimal, subtle narration. The work is shown as a projection in a dimmed room. The image size is around 5 x 7 feet. |
